Federal laws provide limited or no protection for gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination claims. The law simply has not caught up to the science proving fluidity in these areas. Still, some jurisdictions have very broad protections. Twenty-one states and Washington, D.C., consider both gender identity and sexual orientation to be protected classes:
